Trump Reverses Tone on Iran Nuclear Talks, Says No Engagement “Right Now”
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he is “not open to anything right now” regarding Iran’s nuclear negotiations, reversing his earlier indication that he might support a 20-year pause on Iranian uranium enrichment.
In a brief phone interview, he said, “I can't really talk to you about it. Too many things are happening,” according to reports.
Trump also issued a warning to Tehran, suggesting that Iranian officials are fully aware of what could come next. “I can tell you they want to make a deal more than ever, because they know we're — what's going to be happening soon,” he said.
When asked about regional assertions that Iran is trying to “wait out” Washington over both nuclear discussions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said he had not been aware of such claims.
“It's a negotiation. I don't want to be stupid,” he added.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that discussions with the United States are still taking place through mediation facilitated by Pakistan, according to reports.
Tensions in the region have intensified following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.
Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and US-aligned partners in the Gulf, in addition to closing the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating the regional standoff.
