Australia Reports Two Deaths from Rare Mosquito-Borne Encephalitis Virus
(MENAFN) Two people have died from Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) in Alice Springs over the past two months, prompting renewed public health warnings across Australia’s Northern Territory, according to reports citing local media.
A spokesperson for the Northern Territory Department of Health confirmed that the deaths occurred in April and May, but did not provide additional details about the individuals, as reported by a media outlet.
The alert comes after the virus was recently detected in mosquito populations in Darwin, leading authorities to issue a public health advisory.
Murray Valley encephalitis is a rare but potentially severe mosquito-borne illness transmitted through infected mosquito bites.
Health officials say infections are most likely to occur between February and June, with cases typically peaking from March through May.
