Jury Rejects Elon Musk Lawsuit Against OpenAI, Sam Altman

(MENAFN) A California jury has ruled against Elon Musk in his lawsuit targeting OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, bringing an end to a legal dispute that lasted several weeks, according to media reports.

The case, filed in 2024, accused OpenAI of abandoning its original nonprofit commitments and shifting toward a for-profit structure. Musk also named Microsoft as a defendant, alleging the company supported the alleged breach of trust.

Musk sought sweeping remedies, including the return of up to $134 billion in what he described as improperly obtained gains, leadership changes at OpenAI, and the reversal of corporate restructuring that enabled its commercial expansion. He argued that any financial recovery should be directed to charitable purposes rather than personal gain.

However, the jury concluded that the claims were filed outside the legally permitted timeframe, determining that Musk had exceeded the statute of limitations for bringing the case.

A federal judge, Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, said the evidence supported the jury’s findings and indicated she would have dismissed the case immediately on procedural grounds. She also agreed that the claims related to breach of charitable trust and unjust enrichment were time-barred.

The ruling effectively clears OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the company of liability in this case, ending a high-profile legal confrontation between former collaborators in the AI industry.
