Trump Signs Bill to End Historic Government Shutdown

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump officially enacted legislation on Wednesday that secures government funding through the conclusion of January, thereby concluding a record-setting shutdown — the longest in U.S. history.

“The extremists in the other party insisted on creating the longest government shutdown in American history, and they did it purely for political reasons,” Trump declared at the White House while endorsing the funding measure.

“This is no way to run a country. I hope we can all agree that the government should never be shut down again.”

The decision followed a narrow vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, which endorsed the cross-party arrangement by a 222–209 margin just hours before.

The Senate had already ratified the compromise on Monday, effectively ending the 43-day interruption in funding and maintaining government operations at their previous financial levels until January 30.

The newly approved bill also includes three-year funding allocations for major agencies and programs, while reinstating federal employees who had been dismissed by Trump during the shutdown period.

The shutdown commenced on October 1 after budget discussions regarding federal spending priorities collapsed.

As a result, thousands of government workers were either placed on unpaid leave or required to work without compensation, while numerous public services were reduced or halted entirely.

Democratic lawmakers sought to pressure Republicans into prolonging health care subsidies under the semi-universal Affordable Care Act (ACA) and to reverse reductions in Medicaid, the program offering medical assistance to low-income Americans.

These cuts had been initiated earlier in the year by Trump and his allies in Congress.
