S. Korea Posts 12 Percent Surge in October Tech Exports
Technology product shipments climbed 12.2 percent year-over-year to reach 23.33 billion U.S. dollars, maintaining the upward trajectory that has defined the sector since February, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources disclosed. The robust gain underscored resilience in the face of mounting global trade uncertainties that have roiled markets worldwide.
Semiconductor exports emerged as the primary growth engine, skyrocketing 25.4 percent to 15.74 billion dollars as manufacturers worldwide competed for premium chips. High-end memory components—particularly double data rate 5 (DDR5) and high bandwidth memory (HBM) technologies essential for generative artificial intelligence chipsets—fueled the surge, reflecting the sector's pivot toward AI infrastructure.
Yet the strength in semiconductors masked divergence across other technology segments. Display panel shipments contracted 8.8 percent to 1.64 billion dollars, while mobile phone exports plummeted 11.8 percent to 1.61 billion dollars. Computer and peripheral sales edged downward 1.0 percent to 1.11 billion dollars, though communications equipment bucked the trend with a modest 2.5 percent gain to 180 million dollars.
Import demand for technology products weakened, falling 2.9 percent annually to 12.96 billion dollars—a reversal that expanded South Korea's trade surplus in ICT to 10.37 billion dollars. Mobile phones and display panels recorded double-digit import declines, while computer and peripheral purchases surged more than 100 percent year-over-year during the month.
