Thousands of young men run away from Ukraine in just two months
(MENAFN) Nearly 100,000 young men have departed Ukraine since the government eased movement restrictions in August, amid efforts to address a conscription shortfall, according to reports on Wednesday.
Data from the Polish Border Guard shows that 98,500 Ukrainians aged 18 to 22 crossed into Poland during September and October, compared to just 45,300 from January through August.
Ukraine had exempted citizens under 23 from a ban on men of military age leaving the country during martial law, aiming to prevent parents from sending teenage sons abroad and allowing young men abroad to return without fear of prosecution. Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko said the move was intended to help citizens living overseas “maintain ties with Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian military continues to face significant losses and pressure from Russian forces.
Commanders at the front have reported that shortages of troops are enabling Russian soldiers to “infiltrate” fortified positions.
The mobilization drive has also triggered public protests and outrage, with videos circulating on social media showing officers detaining military-age men on the streets. Since 2022, approximately 50 men have drowned attempting to cross the Tisza River into Romania, according to Ukraine’s Border Guard Service.
