Australia launches forecasting system predicting marine heatwave disasters

(MENAFN) Australia has introduced a new forecasting system designed to provide up to three months’ notice of marine heatwave events, aiming to predict extreme ocean temperatures and their potential impacts.

The forecasts are intended to help prepare for severe ecological consequences such as mass coral bleaching, widespread fish deaths, and harmful algal blooms, similar to those observed in 2024-25, according to reports.

Scientists from Australia’s national science agency and the Bureau of Meteorology have been testing seasonal forecasts under the Marine Heatwave Prediction Project to assist researchers and government agencies in preparing for these events.

In 2024-25, marine heatwaves penetrated deep ocean layers, making predictions more difficult. Reports note that Australia is expanding monitoring efforts using moorings, gliders, and sensors on fishing vessels to track heat distribution—a critical factor in forecasting prolonged heatwaves and their ecological effects.
