Australia’s EV Sales Skyrocket 60 Percent
In a report released Thursday, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) revealed that Australians bought 29,244 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) between April and June—a 63.3% increase from the 17,901 BEVs sold in the previous quarter. This marks the highest-ever quarterly sales, surpassing the previous record of 25,696 units in Q2 2023.
The AAA also reported that BEVs now make up 9.3% of the new light vehicle market share for Q2 2025, up from 6.2% in Q1. This is another milestone for the electric vehicle sector in the country.
Meanwhile, sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles continued their decline, with their market share dropping from 86.4% in Q1 2023 to 72.03% in Q2 2025.
Hybrid vehicles accounted for 14.8% of all new light vehicle sales in Q2, marking the lowest share since Q1 2024.
The medium car segment stood out as the only market category where both BEVs and hybrids outpaced ICE vehicles in market share.
