Lavrov Accuses EU of Becoming NATO’s Military Arm
Speaking at a global forum held in Moscow, Lavrov recalled that the EU was initially established as an economic alliance, aimed at improving the quality of life for its population in a "socio-economic sense."
According to Lavrov, the European bloc has experienced a “radical transformation,” shifting away from its original purpose and turning into what he described as an “aggressive military-political bloc” that is now “essentially a branch, or rather an appendage of NATO.”
Lavrov highlighted a specific agreement forged between the EU and NATO, under which all EU nations—including those not formally affiliated with NATO—are expected to permit the transit of NATO forces and equipment through their regions toward eastern areas if the need arises.
This arrangement, Lavrov contended, suggests that EU nations are now “directly involved in preparations for war against our country.”
His comments coincided with a development involving US President Donald Trump, who recently posted screenshots of deferential messages from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
In those messages, the former Dutch leader praised US military actions in Iran, mimicked Trump’s style of writing, and took credit for pushing EU nations to more-than-double their defense budgets, citing a supposed threat from Russia.
