WikiLeaks claims Hollywood have been embedding pro-war messages about Iran
Earlier this month, Israel conducted airstrikes on Iranian targets, citing concerns over Iran’s alleged progress toward nuclear weapons. The United States subsequently escalated the situation by bombing Iranian nuclear facilities.
In a post on X, WikiLeaks pointed to productions such as Top Gun: Maverick, Homeland, 24, and The Fifth Estate as examples where these war-supporting themes were “planting the mental seeds for war with Iran for years.”
WikiLeaks also shared footage of founder Julian Assange speaking at Oxford Union in 2013, where he criticized The Fifth Estate—a biographical drama about WikiLeaks—for opening with a fabricated subplot involving an Iranian nuclear bomb project. Assange recalled the film’s opening scene showing Iranian scientists assembling a bomb, with a character claiming it could be ready within six months.
“How is it that such a lie got into a script about WikiLeaks?” Assange questioned, highlighting that at the time, 16 US intelligence agencies had already concluded that Iran did not possess a nuclear weapons program.
Calling the scene “an attack against Iran,” Assange argued it “fans the flames to start a war with Iran” and serves the interests of “people in the system that want the war.”
Before Israel’s recent airstrikes, both the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and US intelligence sources confirmed there was no evidence of Iran pursuing nuclear weapons.
