Journalist wins case over unlawful termination over support of Gaza
(MENAFN) Australian journalist Antoinette Lattouf successfully won her termination from the public broadcaster ABC, receiving an award of AUD $70,000 (approximately $45,511), as reported by local media on Wednesday.
The Federal Court ruled that ABC violated the Fair Work Act by dismissing Lattouf, partly because she held a political opinion opposing the Israeli military campaign in Gaza, according to reports.
Lattouf, a Lebanese-Australian journalist, had been hired for a short five-day engagement in December 2023 but was terminated after just three days. Her dismissal followed her sharing an Instagram post by Human Rights Watch about the Gaza conflict, captioned “HRW reporting starvation as a tool of war.” ABC claimed this action violated its editorial policy.
The post referenced a Human Rights Watch report detailing allegations that Israeli authorities in Gaza used starvation as a weapon of war.
Lattouf filed a wrongful dismissal suit, arguing that she was fired due to her political views, her ethnicity, and pressure from pro-Israel groups.
The Israeli military has conducted genocide against Gaza resulting in the deaths of over 56,000 Palestinians, since October 7th, 2023, which were primarily women and children.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
