Cambodian PM Refuses Talks Until Thailand Fully Reopens Borders

(MENAFN) Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet declared on Monday that Cambodia will refuse to enter negotiations with Thailand regarding the reopening of their shared border unless Thailand first fully reopens all crossing points, according to a media report.

Manet accused Thailand of unilaterally shutting border gates and insisted that any reopening initiative must originate from Bangkok.

“I hereby announce that once Cambodia has closed the gates, we will not reopen selectively just because you decide to,” he stated.

He made clear, “The closure is permanent unless Thailand reopens all border points simultaneously, exactly as they were prior to June 7. Only then will Cambodia consider reopening. Let me make this very clear.”

The Cambodian leader also emphasized that if Thailand were to fully reopen all crossings, Cambodia would respond promptly within five hours, demonstrating goodwill and mutual trust through the resumption of normal border operations.

Nonetheless, Hun Manet firmly ruled out any dialogue before Thailand takes the initial step to restore access.

Since June 7, Thailand has reduced operating hours and closed some checkpoints along the border. Cambodia responded by shortening its opening hours by an hour and also shuttered several crossing points, as reported by media.

Lt. Gen. Boonsin Padklang, commander of Thailand’s Second Army Region, indicated that a full reopening would only occur following a Regional Border Committee meeting aimed at resolving concerns about military deployments.

In a related development, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra pledged to strengthen border controls and intensify efforts against scam networks believed to be operating from inside Cambodia.

Tensions between the neighboring nations have escalated since May 28, when an exchange of gunfire between Thai and Cambodian troops along the border resulted in the death of one Cambodian soldier.
