Indonesia Imposes Mining Ban on Small Islands to Preserve Ecosystems
(MENAFN) In a decisive move to shield the environment and fragile ecosystems, the Indonesian government has banned mining operations on small islands scattered throughout the archipelago, a top official from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries announced Tuesday.
Hendra Yusran Siry, who serves as expert staff to the minister on ecology and marine resources, emphasized Indonesia’s firm dedication to safeguarding its coastal and marine environments through stringent regulations.
"We prohibit mining activities on small islands. The rule is very clear," he declared during a press briefing.
The official highlighted that at least 30 percent of land on these small islands must be reserved for conservation, public access, and community interests, while the other 70 percent can be allocated for different uses, according to reports from local news outlets.
Further strengthening this policy, Ahmad Aris, director of coastal and small islands at the ministry, pointed to a ruling by the Constitutional Court, which mandates that resource utilization on small islands must fully account for environmental sustainability.
