Zelenskyy Warns Russia Might Attack NATO by 2030

(MENAFN) A media outlet aired an interview on Tuesday in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia might launch an attack on a NATO member within the next five years. He criticized the alliance’s goal to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP, calling the pace of progress “very slow.”

Zelenskyy expressed concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin could attempt to challenge NATO’s foundational Article 5 by targeting one of its members. That clause treats an attack on a single NATO country as an assault on the entire alliance.

When asked whether such an attack might happen in the coming months, Zelenskyy responded that he does not "believe (Russian President Vladimir Putin) is ready."

"We believe that, starting from 2030, Putin can have significantly greater capabilities," he explained, referencing NATO’s target for defense budget increases by 2035.

He emphasized that Ukraine is currently delaying Russia’s military buildup: "Today, Ukraine is holding him up, he has no time to drill the army," he said.

Zelenskyy added that Putin “needs a pause,” and is looking for “sanctions to be lifted.” He cautioned, "10 years is a very long time. He will have a new army ready (by then)."

According to the Ukrainian leader, existing international sanctions are falling short, as components with both civilian and military applications are still being funneled into Russia, aiding its drone and missile manufacturing.

These remarks followed Zelenskyy’s trip to London on Monday, where he met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The two leaders focused on strengthening military collaboration.

During the visit, the UK and Ukraine signed a "landmark agreement" that will enhance cooperation on defense technologies. The pact aims to boost Ukraine’s drone manufacturing and integrate British defense firms "with the cutting-edge technology being developed on the front lines in Ukraine," per a statement from the UK Prime Minister’s Office.
