Cambodian Premier Visits 3,850 Citizens After Deadly Thailand Border Clash

(MENAFN) Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Monday paid a visit to over 3,800 citizens who had relocated to a safety zone in Preah Vihear province following a recent skirmish along the Thai border.

The evacuation followed heightened tensions after Cambodian and Thai troops exchanged gunfire in a contested border region on May 28. The brief clash claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier, escalating fears of further violence.

According to a statement posted on Hun Manet’s official social media channels, 1,282 families—amounting to 3,850 individuals—have taken refuge in a temporary shelter established within a local pagoda.

"I would like to sincerely thank the leaders, civil servants, armed forces, and all relevant institutions across Preah Vihear province for their dedication and commitment in assisting citizens evacuating from high-risk border areas," the prime minister stated.

The recent violence has reignited long-standing disputes between Cambodia and Thailand over demarcation lines, particularly near historical sites. While both sides have engaged in talks previously, localized clashes have continued to disrupt peace efforts.
