South Africa Demands Peace Talks After U.S. Strikes on Iran
(MENAFN) South Africa has voiced deep concern about the United States’ recent military actions targeting Iranian sites, urging all involved parties to engage in dialogue to halt the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
A statement from the South African Presidency on Sunday expressed significant unease over Washington’s involvement. “President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African government have noted with a great deal of anxiety the entry by the United States of America into the Israel-Iran war,” the statement declared.
This response followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Saturday that American forces had struck three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
These American airstrikes came after a series of Israeli attacks beginning June 13, targeting multiple sites within Iran, including nuclear and military installations. These assaults have led to the deaths of senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone strikes against Israeli locations.
According to Iran’s Health Ministry, the conflict has resulted in over 400 deaths and more than 3,500 injuries on the Iranian side as of Saturday. Israel has reported 24 deaths linked to the violence.
South Africa’s official statement underscored its earnest wish for all parties to prioritize dialogue over further conflict.
“South Africa calls on the United States, Israel, and Iran to give the United Nations the opportunity and space to lead on the peaceful resolution of the matters of dispute, including the inspection and verification of Iran's status of uranium enrichment, as well as its broader nuclear capacity,” it concluded.
