Romania’s President Taps Illie Bolojan as New PM
(MENAFN) Media reports that Romanian President Nicusor Dan named seasoned liberal politician Illie Bolojan as the new prime minister on Friday.
Expressing gratitude toward Bolojan and the coalition of liberal parties negotiating a pro-Western reform government—including the Social Democrat Party (PSD), National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and Hungarians’ Union (UDMR)—Dan emphasized the critical need for a stable majority to tackle Romania’s deep-rooted challenges.
“It is in Romania's interest that the government be supported by a solid majority,” Dan stated, underlining the severe difficulties confronting the nation.
Highlighting economic revival as the immediate priority, Dan said, “The urgency for Romania is economic recovery, but to have an economic recovery, you need to have a solid foundation. And for that, we have to work and the responsibility lies with the government and the coalition that will support it.”
In response, Bolojan expressed appreciation for the appointment and vowed to accelerate coalition negotiations without delay.
He said, “In these actions, I will pursue three directions. Let us put the country's finances in order, let us work for good governance that will create conditions for development in Romania, and, through everything we do, last but not least, let us show due respect to Romanians.”
At 56 years old, Bolojan leads the centrist National Liberal Party (PNL). He has also served as head of the Romanian Senate and briefly as interim president between February and May.
