Germany Urges Iran to Resume Nuclear Talks

(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday appealed to Iran to enter into face-to-face discussions with the United States concerning its atomic activities, in an effort to avoid further worsening of the crisis.

While addressing journalists in Brussels prior to a gathering of EU foreign ministers, Wadephul emphasized that Iran had not responded to their position during last week’s negotiations in Geneva.

This, he noted, was followed by American military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

“We made it very clear to the Iranian side back then that a real prerequisite for resolving the conflict was Iran is willing to negotiate directly with the US. This message wasn't fully understood at the time, and we will reiterate it now,” the minister said.

Wadephul stressed that Tehran must realize that the global community “will not accept that a nuclear-armed Iran.” He added that Europe, like Israel and the wider region, shares a common objective in reducing the danger posed by long-range missile systems, which must be included in the dialogue.

“We need a negotiated solution, it is more urgent than ever, and Iran is now required to be willing to engage in direct talks with the United States. We, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in the E3 format—will offer whatever support we can," he added.

Wadephul also mentioned that EU foreign ministers would deliberate on the latest events in the Middle East, as well as the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, during their conference in Brussels.
