EU Slams Fatal Damascus Church Attack
The assault occurred on Sunday when a suicide attacker affiliated with the ISIS (Daesh) militant group opened fire inside the church located in eastern Damascus, before detonating explosives. According to Syria’s Health Ministry, the attack left no fewer than 20 people dead and 52 others wounded.
In a public statement, the European External Action Service (EEAS) emphasized: "It (attack) is a grave reminder of the need to intensify efforts against the terrorist threat and to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh and other terrorist organisations."
The EU reaffirmed its continued backing for Syrians amid the country’s ongoing instability and voiced support for transitional leadership efforts aimed at restoring safety and order throughout the nation.
This violent episode follows a recent counterterrorism operation by Syria’s Interior Ministry, which disclosed on May 26 that authorities had uncovered ISIS sleeper cells operating in the Damascus countryside. The security raid reportedly resulted in the confiscation of various light and medium-caliber weapons.
Syria has remained in a state of unrest since the collapse of the Assad regime. Government forces have persistently pursued suspects involved in criminal activity, human rights abuses, and terror-related offenses.
President Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled for nearly a quarter-century, fled to Russia in December—bringing an end to the Baath Party’s dominance that began in 1963.
