EU Condemns Damascus Church Attack
(MENAFN) On Monday, the European Union issued a "strong" denunciation of the "terrorist attack" that struck the Mar Ilyas Church in Damascus.
The bloc also extended its backing for the Syrian population amid ongoing instability in the country.
According to Syria’s Health Ministry, a suicide attacker linked to the ISIS (Daesh) extremist group stormed the church located in eastern Damascus on Sunday.
The assailant opened fire before detonating explosives, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people and wounding 52 others.
In a formal message, the European External Action Service (EEAS) declared: "It (attack) is a grave reminder of the need to intensify efforts against the terrorist threat and to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh and other terrorist organisations."
This statement emphasized the importance of ramping up global efforts to tackle extremist violence and dismantle terrorist networks.
The EU reiterated its commitment to the Syrian population during what it described as a pivotal phase in the country’s history.
It conveyed unity with all Syrians and endorsed actions taken by transitional leadership to restore nationwide safety.
This assault occurred only weeks after Syria’s Interior Ministry disclosed the exposure of ISIS sleeper cells in rural Damascus on May 26.
Officials claimed that during the security operation, they confiscated light- and medium-caliber weaponry.
Following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad government, Syrian security forces have sustained their efforts to track down suspects tied to criminal acts, abuses of human rights, and terror-related offenses.
Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly a quarter of a century, fled to Russia in December, marking the conclusion of the Baath Party’s grip on power since 1963.
