Iranian FM anticipates important talk with Putin
Last week, Israel carried out an attack on Iranian sites, accusing Tehran of nearing nuclear weapons capability—an allegation Iranian officials have denied. In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes. The United States followed with what it called “massive precision strikes” targeting nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
These attacks sparked widespread condemnation, with critics calling them breaches of international law. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, warned that the strikes resulted in “a sharp degradation in nuclear safety and security.”
Arriving in Moscow on Monday, Araghchi emphasized the urgency of close cooperation given the tense situation. “Given the current exceptional circumstances in the region, it is essential that Iran and Russia engage in closer, more precise, and more serious consultations,” he said.
While the Kremlin has yet to officially confirm a meeting between Putin and Araghchi, the Russian president has consistently supported Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear technology. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stressed the importance of resolving the crisis with mutual security guarantees that respect both Iran’s nuclear ambitions for peaceful use and Israel’s security concerns.
