US Declares Success in Attacking Iran's Nuclear Program
The announcement came during a high-profile press conference on Saturday evening, where Hegseth stood beside the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Caine, to share details of the mission, officially named “Operation Midnight Hammer.”
Hegseth emphasized that the “order we received from our commander-in-chief was focused, it was powerful, and it was clear.”
He explained that the mission inflicted significant damage on “the Iranian nuclear program,” while stressing that the attack “did not target Iranian troops or the Iranian people.”
He reiterated that “Iran’s nuclear ambitions have been obliterated,” underscoring the claimed precision and intent of the operation.
Caine provided more insight into the scale and composition of the strike.
He said the operation included over 125 aircraft, such as seven B-2 Spirit strategic stealth bombers, along with various reconnaissance planes, refueling aircraft, and fighter jets.
The strike began at midnight on Friday and extended into early Saturday morning.
According to Caine, a major component of the B-2 bomber fleet launched from the mainland US.
In a strategic move to maintain an element of surprise, “part of the package proceeded to the west and into the Pacific as a decoy,” he noted.
The operation, as described by top defense officials, appears to mark a significant escalation in Washington's efforts to counter Iran’s nuclear capabilities, while aiming to avoid direct conflict with Iranian forces or civilians.
